A Tall Car From a Land of Tall People
Think Volvo, and maybe you think sensible, safe, dull. But they've started to change that image with a new generation of styling and performance that loses none of the safety. And the new Cross-Country really pushes the envelope.
The Cross-Country starts as a V70 wagon, with turbocharged power and the traditional Volvo virtues. Then it goes up - up 2.8 inches, to give 8.2 inches of ground clearance.
On the outside, the Cross-Country adds tough-looking body cladding, fender flares, and a black nosepiece. Add all-wheel-drive, aggressive tires, and a firmer than usual suspension, and you have a very unusual Volvo - but a very reassuring and comfortable car.
This is the 4x4 for those who feel the need for Swede.
This is Not a Lawyer Joke.
Volvo has long specialized in safety. Sitting in one of their cars is to be protected as possible without involving the Secret Service. Front air bags. Side air bags. Head air bags. Even special safety restraints for car seats and pets. Volvo leaves nothing to chance.
The newest safety system from Sweden is whiplash protection.
Whiplash happens when your head is snapped forward and back by an accident impact. In minor cases, it strains the neck muscles; in serious ones, it can lead to life-threatening damage.
Volvo's system allows the top of the seat and the headrest to move with your head in the event of an accident, cushioning it and supporting the back of your head to take stress off the neck. It's not a cure-all. But it is evidence of what happens when people who design cars remember that they'll be used by people.
